NYU Abu Dhabi's 3D-printed stent more than doubles drainage in lab tests after weight-loss surgery

NYU Abu Dhabi's Ramadi Lab reported on 7 October two stent designs for draining abscesses caused by leaks after bariatric surgery, a clinical problem raised by clinicians at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. The Lily stent uses a six-part, flower-like cross-section to improve flow, and BRIDGE is 3D-printed with an internal lattice that bends through complex anatomy without kinking. In laboratory testing BRIDGE more than doubled drainage performance against conventional stents, and the team is developing biodegradable materials so the device breaks down once the leak heals.

Why it matters. This is clinician-led device engineering inside the UAE, with the problem defined at the bedside and the prototype built in an Abu Dhabi lab. A stent that dissolves after healing would spare patients a second procedure.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Device manufacturers and contract developers can partner on biodegradable materials, medical-grade 3D printing and the regulatory pathway for a UAE-originated device with a defined clinical champion.

Next milestone. Further testing of the biodegradable BRIDGE design ahead of a first clinical evaluation

KAUST and Oxford sensor reads three forms of a Parkinson's protein in blood within 40 minutes

KAUST researchers, working with the University of Oxford, have developed a blood-based electronic sensor that detects three forms of alpha-synuclein, a protein closely linked to Parkinson's disease, in a study published in Science Advances. The method isolates small packages released by nerve cells into the bloodstream, then reads their protein contents with an organic electrochemical transistor, measuring all three forms within 40 minutes. In a blinded evaluation of 57 participants from the Oxford Discovery cohort, including people with isolated REM sleep behaviour disorder, it told disease-associated profiles apart from healthy controls with 90.9 percent accuracy.

Why it matters. More than 95 percent of alpha-synuclein in blood comes from red blood cells, so isolating the nerve-derived fraction is what makes a brain signal readable from a blood sample. Measuring three forms together points toward earlier detection of neurodegeneration from a routine draw.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Diagnostics companies and neurology centres gain a Saudi-developed platform to co-develop through larger clinical validation, aligned with the Kingdom's priorities on an ageing population and healthy longevity.

Next milestone. Validation in larger, prospective, multicentre patient studies

NYU Abu Dhabi finds precancerous cells enter distinct senescence states that respond differently to drugs

A New York University Abu Dhabi team led by biology professor Kirsten Sadler Edepli, working with the university's Centre for Genomics and Systems Biology, published findings in EMBO Reports, as WAM reported on 29 September. Using a zebrafish model of liver cancer, the team found that activating a single cancer-causing gene pushed cells into different types of senescence: some entered permanent arrest while others regained the ability to divide. A senolytic compound cleared some precancerous cells and left others unaffected.

Why it matters. Senolytics are one of the most closely watched drug classes in longevity and cancer medicine. Showing that the type of senescence shapes both tumour risk and drug response points to more precise targeting, and the work comes from an Abu Dhabi genomics centre.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Senolytic and longevity-drug developers can partner with NYU Abu Dhabi on distinguishing senescent cell types as biomarkers for patient selection.

Why it matters. Julphar stands out among Gulf-founded pharmaceutical manufacturers for a public reporting record stretching back decades. Its results give the sector a recurring, hard financial benchmark in a field largely reported through announcements.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. A Gulf manufacturer with decades of audited accounts gives regional investors a comparable to price new biotechnology ventures against.

Next milestone. Full-year results, and whether margin improvement holds as the company invests in new capacity.

SFDA bans syringe-style cosmetic packaging from January 2027

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority prohibited cosmetic products packaged to resemble injectables and mandated accompanying warning statements. The rule takes effect on 1 January 2027.

Why it matters. Cosmetic products sold in syringe-shaped containers borrow the visual authority of a medical procedure without the regulatory burden of one. The SFDA has addressed this directly by regulating the packaging rather than waiting to litigate the claim.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. A cosmeceutical brand selling into the Kingdom has 15 months to redesign primary packaging. For formulators and packaging suppliers that is a dated, mandatory reformatting of an entire product category.

Next milestone. Enforcement action, or a published list of non-compliant products

Sidra Medicine treats Qatar's first spinal muscular atrophy patient with gene therapy

Sidra Medicine administered a Novartis gene therapy to Qatar's first patient with spinal muscular atrophy. Reporting describes Qatar as the third country worldwide to administer the therapy.

Why it matters. The therapy is Swiss. What is Qatari is the capability to deliver it, which requires a centre able to handle an advanced therapy and a payer willing to fund one.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Delivering a one-time gene therapy builds the cold chain, dosing protocol and payer pathway that any future advanced therapy in Qatar will use.

Next milestone. A second advanced therapy delivered through the same pathway, and whether a Qatari-originated asset eventually runs on it.

Invest Qatar positions the country as a biotechnology hub anchored on genomics

Invest Qatar has set out a biotechnology proposition built on Qatar Foundation, the Qatar Biomedical Research Institute, Sidra Medicine and Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar, with precision medicine and genomics as the focus.

Why it matters. Qatar has chosen depth over breadth. Where Saudi Arabia leads on manufacturing scale and the UAE on data scale, Qatar leads on concentration: its institutions sit within a single foundation rather than across competing ministries.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Concentrating genomics, biomedical research and clinical care inside one foundation shortens the distance from discovery to patient, which is where speed counts most.

Next milestone. The first asset to move from Qatar Biomedical Research Institute discovery into a Sidra Medicine trial.

The stated scope covers bringing international biotechnology companies into the Kingdom, technology transfer and localised vaccine production.

Why it matters. Announced partnership value, with deployment as the next figure to track. The structure is notable because it routes capital around the state contract manufacturer rather than through it.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. A privately structured half-billion-dollar partnership shows biotechnology capital in the Kingdom now flows through private channels as well as the state manufacturer.

Next milestone. Disclosure of deployed capital, and the first named programme the partnership funds.

Saudi Ministry of Health launches Launch in Saudi for advanced therapies

At BIO in San Diego the Ministry of Health announced Launch in Saudi, a programme intended to speed access to health innovations and advanced therapies, alongside a clinical-trials investment roundtable with global contract research and pharmaceutical representatives.

Why it matters. Access programmes prove themselves in delivery. The measure that matters is how many advanced therapies reach Saudi patients through it, and how fast.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. A dedicated access route for advanced therapies is the piece of national infrastructure that decides whether cell and gene therapies reach Saudi patients in the same cycle as Western ones.

Next milestone. The first advanced therapy to reach a Saudi patient through the programme, and the elapsed time from application.

SFDA biosimilar guideline takes effect

Version 1.0 of the SFDA biosimilar guideline was issued on 10 June 2026 and took effect on 10 July 2026, setting development and approval requirements for the class.

Why it matters. Biosimilars are where localisation economics work best, because the molecule is established and the competitive variable is manufacturing cost. A clear national guideline is the precondition for that.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. A published biosimilar pathway is the precondition for local biologics manufacturing to have a market, because it tells a manufacturer exactly what approval requires before it commits to a plant.

Next milestone. The first biosimilar approved under version 1.0, and whether it is manufactured in the Kingdom.

Abu Dhabi opens the UAE's first genomics-driven clinical trial, for Alzheimer's prevention

IROS, part of M42, the Department of Health Abu Dhabi and Halia Therapeutics are using Emirati Genome Programme data to identify APOE4 carriers before symptoms appear, then trialling an investigational therapy in that cohort.

Why it matters. This is the first published instance of the Emirati genomic dataset being used to construct a trial cohort rather than to describe a population. The dataset and the recruitment strategy are Emirati; the therapeutic asset is American.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Using a national genomic dataset to build a trial cohort turns population sequencing from a description of a population into a research asset with commercial value.

Next milestone. Trial enrolment figures, and whether the same cohort-selection method is reused for a second indication.

Abu Dhabi Biobank opens its data to AI cancer screening with BioTwin

The Abu Dhabi Biobank signed BioTwin to run AI virtual human twin models against its genomic and clinical data, beginning with multi-cancer screening.

Why it matters. The consideration here is data access rather than capital, so data itself is the currency of the deal. It also makes the biobank's retained rights the term worth watching.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Validated AI screening against a national biobank would give the emirate a diagnostic capability it owns rather than licenses.

Next milestone. Published clinical validation, and the terms on which the biobank retains rights to models trained on its data.

Opportunity. A formal corridor into the largest life-sciences cluster in the United States gives Emirati companies a recognised route to partners, capital and talent.

Next milestone. The first company to raise capital or sign a partner through the corridor.

MSD announces a pharmaceutical logistics hub in Abu Dhabi

Announced at BIO 2026, the hub is intended to route therapies from Abu Dhabi into regional markets.

Why it matters. A distribution hub is a routing role rather than a production one. It is also the step that most often precedes local packaging and manufacture.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Regional distribution control is the commercial layer that lets a producer reach six markets from one location, and it is the step that usually precedes local production.

Next milestone. Disclosed timeline and volumes, and whether the hub expands from routing into packaging or production.

Why it matters. Sequencing and discovery partnerships have been signed repeatedly across the region. Manufacturing intent is the part of this one that would be new.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Pairing a national genomic dataset with a gene-editing platform is the combination that could produce a Gulf-originated therapeutic rather than a licensed one.

Why it matters. This is a distribution agreement. It is recorded because the pre-negotiated GCC expansion clause is becoming a standard feature of Saudi entry agreements.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Pre-negotiated GCC expansion clauses turn a single Saudi registration into a six-market commercial option, which changes the economics of entering the region at all.

Next milestone. SFDA filing acceptance, and whether the GCC option is exercised.

Why it matters. Gulf regulators are increasingly clearing frontier oncology before or alongside Western markets. Each early clearance strengthens the region's standing as a first-launch market.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Approving frontier oncology ahead of Western markets makes the UAE a credible first-launch market, which is a commercial asset for the country and a faster route for patients.

Next milestone. Whether first-launch sequencing repeats across other frontier classes.

Its published mandate spans research and development, clinical trials, manufacturing and clinic operation for longevity therapies. It is the first dedicated regulator for the category in any jurisdiction.

Why it matters. Longevity medicine elsewhere is practised across existing regulators: a clinic licence here, a device approval there. Dubai has made one authority responsible for the category itself. That decides where the rulebook gets written.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. A regulator with manufacturing inside its remit is a distinctive thing. It means a company making a longevity therapeutic in Dubai deals with one authority rather than assembling permissions from several, and it gives the emirate first claim on defining what evidence a longevity claim requires.

Why it matters. Abu Dhabi now has two sovereign-built life-science platforms, Mubadala Bio and Arcera, under different owners. Whether they consolidate or compete is the structural development to watch.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Two sovereign platforms working together rather than separately would give Abu Dhabi the scale to compete for the largest manufacturing mandates.

Next milestone. Whether the partnership produces a joint facility or remains a commercial agreement.

Abu Dhabi Biobank, jointly led by the Department of Health Abu Dhabi and M42, partnered with Human Life CORD Japan to build a localised GMP manufacturing pathway for umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell therapies. Stated target applications include age-related frailty and musculoskeletal degeneration.

Why it matters. The Gulf already administers cell therapies. A domestic GMP pathway for UC-MSC would be the first local production of a cell therapy product in the UAE, taking the UAE from delivery to manufacture.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Age-related frailty brings this programme closer to a longevity indication than any other verified Gulf cell therapy. Built out, the pathway would connect the region's longevity clinics to a regional supply.

Saudi Ministry of Health opens a national inspection campaign on hair transplant practice

The Ministry of Health launched a national inspection campaign covering hair transplant providers across the Kingdom.

Why it matters. Hair restoration is one of the largest aesthetic procedure volumes in the Gulf. A national campaign signals the ministry has made practice standards a priority.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Consolidation. Inspection regimes reward providers who can document practitioner credentials and clinical governance, and they shift share toward them.

Next milestone. Published campaign findings and outcomes

The Omani Ministry of Health set a deadline of six months from 22 April 2026 for all imported medical devices, including diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical equipment. Shipments from non-compliant firms are to be suspended at entry points after that date.

Why it matters. Oman is the smallest of the six device markets and is now formalising registration. A hard import deadline makes registration the clear route to market.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. A firm registration deadline gives Oman a usable device register for the first time, which is what lets the market be entered deliberately rather than opportunistically.

Next milestone. Publication of the Ministry circular confirming the date, and the first enforcement action.

Emirates Drug Establishment registers a once-daily oral GLP-1 for weight management

The EDE registered orforglipron, an oral alternative to injectable weight-management therapies, reported as the second registration worldwide.

Why it matters. Metabolic disease prevalence in the Gulf is high and payers are willing. That combination is why the region keeps appearing near the front of the launch sequence for this class.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Being second in the world to register an oral GLP-1 confirms the UAE as a launch market for metabolic medicine, a category where regional prevalence gives it genuine commercial weight.

Next milestone. Reimbursement decision, and whether local fill and finish follows the registration.

Why it matters. Federal registration and emirate-level licensing are separate processes, and telling them apart is the key to reading the UAE market correctly.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. A single federal certificate covering the whole country removes the most expensive friction in the UAE market for any manufacturer entering it.

Next milestone. The first cohort of products registered end to end under the EDE, and the elapsed review time.

Opportunity. An approval followed by a physical office is the sequence that converts a market from an export destination into a place where a company builds.

Next milestone. Confirmation the Kingdom office opens, and whether a local trial or manufacturing step follows.

UAE replaces its flat sugar tax with one priced on sugar density

Cabinet Decision No. 197 of 2025, effective 1 January 2026, replaced a flat 50 per cent ad valorem excise on sweetened beverages with tiers set by sugar content per 100ml: below 5g exempt, 5g to below 8g at AED 0.79 per litre, and 8g and above at AED 1.09 per litre. Artificially sweetened drinks are exempt.

Why it matters. The first Gulf fiscal instrument that rewards incremental reformulation rather than category membership. Under the tiered model, cutting sugar content can move a drink into a lower rate.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. A tax priced on composition creates commercial pull for sweetener and ingredient technology, and it is a template that could later be applied to fat or sodium.

Next milestone. Reformulation activity, or an extension of the tiered model to another nutrient

Why it matters. Three tier-one vaccine manufacturers signing on one day reflects policy coordination rather than four separate commercial decisions. Definitive agreements are the next evidentiary step.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Vaccine localisation with knowledge transfer builds the capability that matters most to a health system in a crisis, which is the ability to make its own doses.

The Abu Dhabi Investment Office partnered with The EVERY Company and Vivici to build a multi-tenanted precision fermentation facility with four million litres of stated capacity, built to food safety and halal certification standards, with export routes via the UAE's comprehensive economic partnership agreements.

Why it matters. Hard infrastructure rather than a memorandum. Fermentation capacity at this scale is the keystone of Gulf food biotechnology, and the multi-tenant design opens it to companies beyond its anchor tenants.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. A multi-tenant fermenter is shared infrastructure. A precision-fermentation lipid, protein or ingredient company could use it without raising the capital to build its own, which is the usual barrier.

A preprint reported genetic insights from 43,608 individuals in the UAE Genome Program, the largest published analysis cohort from the programme to date. The programme operator separately states that 780,000 UAE nationals took part.

Why it matters. Participation and published analysis are two different numbers, and the distance between them is where the translation opportunity sits.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. A published analysis cohort of this size is a distinctive research asset, and it is the basis on which international collaborators will want access.

Next milestone. Peer-reviewed publication, and the size of the next analysis cohort.

King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre reported conducting 48% of clinical trials registered in the Kingdom during the first half of 2025.

Why it matters. Concentration of this degree is genuine depth. Building a second and third centre on the same model is the obvious next move.

The SFDA approved a Phase I trial of a CAR-T therapy developed with King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, targeting relapsed CD19-positive acute lymphoblastic leukaemia using a closed transduction system.

Why it matters. Here the underlying asset originates in the Gulf rather than being licensed into it, which makes this one of the most significant records in this dataset.

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority closed an unlicensed cosmetics operation, seizing approximately 1.5 million units and recording falsified documentation.

Why it matters. Enforcement at that scale addresses an established parallel supply chain rather than an isolated seller.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Enforcement of this size makes documented provenance a commercial differentiator rather than a compliance cost. A distributor who can prove chain of custody wins share.

Next milestone. Whether seizures at this scale recur, which would indicate the channel rather than the seller

The Department of Health Abu Dhabi, M42 and PureHealth announced a partnership with GEMMABio Therapeutics to establish dedicated manufacturing and research centres within the emirate's academic health institutions, beginning with gene therapy for children with spinal muscular atrophy type 1.

Why it matters. Naming a first indication and placing the centres inside academic health institutions is more specific than most manufacturing announcements in the region. A7i records it as proposed, with site and timeline the next details to track.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Placing gene-therapy manufacturing inside academic health institutions is how discovery, production and clinical delivery end up in the same building.

Why it matters. Disclosure on delivery platforms and an activity-equivalent figure go beyond any comparable regime. This is demand-side regulation aimed at the out-of-home eating that drives the Kingdom's metabolic burden.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Mandatory disclosure at this granularity creates measurable commercial pressure to reformulate, which is the demand signal for fat and sodium replacement ingredients.

SALIC, its agricultural investment arm, reported more than SAR 27bn in managed assets across 13 projects in seven countries, in strategic commodities.

Why it matters. Saudi food capital is going to controlled-environment agriculture, halal manufacturing and upstream commodity supply. Cultivated meat, precision fermentation and alternative protein are greenfield for both.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. Gulf food biotechnology is concentrated in Abu Dhabi today, with the Saudi category open as greenfield. For a company in the space, that is a clear read on where to domicile and where to look next.

Next milestone. A first PIF or SALIC allocation to fermentation or cultivated production

The GCC's newest regulation on vegetable oils expands the list of those permitted

GSO 1754-1:2025, Edible Vegetable Oils Part 1, Edition 3, was approved on 30 April 2025, superseding three earlier standards. It is a composition, quality and safety specification permitting named edible vegetable oils for human consumption, including cottonseed, sunflower, rapeseed, safflower, soybean, maize and palm.

Why it matters. This is the current GCC regulation naming vegetable oils, and it permits them. The text of the standard is the clearest statement of Gulf policy on seed oils.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. For a novel or fermentation-derived fat, this specification is the compliance target. A product with a new oil identity takes the novel foods route instead, which Abu Dhabi has just built.

Why it matters. Exosomes are sold across Gulf aesthetic clinics as a finished treatment. A regulator calling them investigational in a binding standard is the clearest statement yet of the evidence the category now needs to generate.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. An investigational classification is a route. It tells a company what kind of evidence would move an exosome product into approved use, and that evidence is open for the first company in the region to generate.

Next milestone. The first exosome product to complete a trial under the standard

Why it matters. Hevolution is the largest dedicated healthspan funder in the world by committed capital, at more than SAR1.5bn. To date it has deployed that capital mainly with companies and institutions abroad.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. This is the clearest funding opportunity in Gulf life sciences. A credible Saudi-domiciled geroscience company would be competing for capital that is already committed to the category and ready for a local home.

Why it matters. This document places Abu Dhabi among the most rigorously governed aesthetics markets. Explicit scope-of-practice tiers and a supervised logbook requirement are more prescriptive than the rules in most of Europe.

A7i assessment

Opportunity. A market that defines who may inject is a market where training, certification and supervised practice have commercial value. That is a service line, and it is open for a regional provider to build at scale.
